Introduction
Dr. Dong-In Lee is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences at Pukyong National University, where he concurrently serves as Distinguished Research Fellow of the Institute of Atmospheric and Environmental Research. His research centres on typhoon dynamics, radar and wind-profiler based field-observation techniques, and the integration of artificial intelligence into extreme-weather early-warning systems. He has authored more than one hundred papers in leading international journals and has led several flagship Korean national meteorological programmes, bringing deep academic expertise and extensive experience in organising multi-platform field campaigns.
Visiting details
In December 2025, Dr Lee was invited by the Asia-Pacific Typhoon Collaborative Research Center (APTCRC) for an academic visit in Shanghai. During the stay he collaborated with APTCRC scientists on:
(i) coordinated field-observation strategies combining radar, wind-profiler and other multi-source platforms for typhoon monitoring;
(ii) novel approaches to track, intensity and surface-wind estimation that blend advanced data-assimilation techniques with machine-learning algorithms;
(iii) practical pathways for embedding AI-driven analytics into operational early-warning systems for extreme weather.
