The Asia-Pacific Typhoon Collaborative Research Center conducts high-precision typhoon wind field measurements
On September 4, 2022, the Asia-Pacific Typhoon Collaborative Research Center (AP-TCRC), together with a number of organizations, sent a team of wind chasers to deploy laser wind radar, wind profile radar, and other equipment in Rui'an, Zhejiang Province, Jinshan, Shanghai, Lingang Special Area, and Yangshan Harbor to carry out high-precision measurements of the wind field of typhoons in response to Super Typhoon Hinnamnor.
It is reported that this action is the first wind chasing action since the establishment of the AP-TCRC. The AP-TCRC will take Yangshan Port as a typical area, rely on high-resolution wind field data to enhance the impact of wind field changes on the complex terrain of the coastal port area, carry out cutting-edge research on the application of digital twin weather with typhoon as a typical example, explore the pilot construction of typhoon prevention and digital city in the coastal cities, and promote the digital transformation of the work of typhoon prevention and disaster prevention and mitigation.
Previously, the AP-TCRC has deployed a floating laser wind radar in Shanghai Jinshan and 1 floating laser wind radar in the sea near Rui'an, Zhejiang Province, to detect the information of offshore wind field and grasp the changes of local meteorological and hydrological data.
On September 3, the wind-chasing team deployed three LiDARs and one wind profile radar in Yangshan Port Area and Lingang Special Area respectively, and formally operated them on September 4, to timely grasp the evolution of wind speed and direction, changes in horizontal and vertical wind speed, turbulence characteristics and other atmospheric wind field information, and to monitor the force 8 gale on the sea surface near Lingang. At the same time, the AP-TCRC also used satellite monitoring data to observe the structural characteristics and trajectory of typhoons in larger regions from a macro perspective.
It is reported that this action will enhance the understanding of the research and operational staff on the characteristics of wind farms in the Lingang Special Area, which is of great significance for providing more accurate disaster prevention and mitigation services in the region in the future.
As the world's only international typhoon research institution, the AP-TCRC will introduce new technologies and equipment, as well as multidisciplinary and multi-country talents, to carry out research on typhoon defense and digital urban-oceanic meteorological disaster early warning, to play a fundamental public welfare role in improving the disaster prevention and mitigation capacity of the Asia-Pacific region and the world, and to create a new "template" for global cooperation in typhoon science.
